Review of 25th Hour (2002) by David K — 22 Sep 2008
A true American masterpiece, Lee shows complete control over his film by exploring the duality of the political system as it exists in the United States. As a morality tale, "25th Hour" is really well done.
Monty (Norton) is a lost soul tiptoeing the middle line of society. Around him are extremes of every aspect of American life. In the wake of September 11th, Lee appears to be arguing that everyone deserves a second chance.
Especially those that are living the "American dream" just on the wrong side of the law. That brings the American law into the conversation and Lee even questions that aspect of it all. "25th Hour" is one of the more complex films I've ever seen asking more quetions than it answers, but it leaves the decision making up to its audience.
It asks Americans to think about their society which is the true mark of a great artist. Spike Lee is a great artist and "25th Hour" is a modern American masterpiece.
