Review of 25th Hour (2002) by Mike H — 09 Jun 2009
"Champagne for my real friends, and real pain for my sham friends".
Ed Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Barry Pepper...not sure how I never came across this movie till now?
Spike Lee brilliantly directs the story of a convicted drug dealer's last day of freedom and expands it into a meditation on New York and America in the aftermath of 9/11. Monty's past was full of money and the delusion of omnipotence, and his future is a question mark. Each character reacts against uncertainty in different ways: Monty reacts with anger, Jake has a misguided fixation on an underage student, and Frank reacts with an aggressive denial that opposes his gentle nature. How did you react to the uncertainty of post 9/11 America?
