Review of 24 Hour Party People (2002) by Leighton W — 07 Aug 2009
Inspired, shambolic, vivid, critical, baggy, tight, decadent, sombre, vibrant and honest, like Icarus falling from the flames, it's a journey of highs and lows. And it's all about Anthony H Wilson, the now late great and should be much honoured Tony Wilson.
Although much malined by all and sundry, including his charges, Wilson was tireless, open and in a world of TV punditry, plentiful in his opinion and thoughts. Coogan is brilliant as "The second biggest Twat in Manchester" (Copyright Peter Hook) as is all the cast.
But this is not the Factory story, it's a massive part of it, but not all.Despite all his protest and proclomation it's about one man. And to speak ill of the dead is not a forte I adhere too, and I'm glad to say that Tony H Wilson did everything he could when he could, all for the love of a city that villified him.
He was a classic ego, but one which was loved, abused (to an extent) and respected. Michael Winterbottom, we salute you sir.
