Review of 24 Hour Party People (2002) by Leo A — 04 Nov 2009
As a northerner old enough to remember the wanker with nostalgic affection, said remembrance did nothing to assuage the lashings of boredom and pain I felt watching Tony Wilson's story unfold on screen.
A patchwork quilt of lame exposition, amateur hour reconstruction and clashing styles, 24HPP goes on way too long about stuff that isn't very interesting - twice. Coogan's turn as AW is brave and tenacious but, like the man himself, he's surrounded by ineptitude.
Some people swear by this movie. So do I: it's fucking shite. 1 star for some eager, if repetitive, club scenes and the music itself.
