Review of 2:37 (2006) by Mohamed F — 05 May 2010
Australian multiplot, highly inspired by 'Elephant', and it actually did a better job than the latter, though it was still not that good.
Knowing how Australian film industry is striving to make anything, this makes the area of expertise in that field a bit narrow, which would explain the shortcomings of this movie.
The script was pretty much a mess, it had a point, it tried to deliver it cleverly, but it still failed and felt a bit naive at times.
The cinematography was the master of all messes, how could anyone possibly think they could get away with shooting a Super 16, SD video & HD video and putting them all into one movie?
The looks of shots varied through the same scene and from scene to scene, it didn't work out at all.
Dirtecting copied Gus Van Sant in almost every single aspect, like the low angle shots of the sky, the gliding cameras following the kids around, the overlap of shots between different plots from different points of view, dealing with the topic of death in a high school,...
But again, it made more sense than Elephant, but the latter was far superior artistically.
