Review of 22 Jump Street (2014) by Darren F — 31 Mar 2015
Self aware redundancy is just as grating as regular rendundancy. It's a movie that essentially a riff on movie sequels, but the angle never really works.Lots of tired gay - tension jokes, and Jonas Hill becoming the fat Ben Stiller essentially, with his awkward unfunny ticks more prevalent here than before.
Channing Tatum manages to attempt to carry the films humor, while he's funnier than Jonah he doesn't have the chops to carry this movie. The movie is too in love with itself, constantly winking at its audience and the problem it's to in love with its clichà (C)s to fully subvert them into satire.
There are funny moments throughout, don't get me wrong, but where the first one had almost no dead spots, this one has them in spades.
