Review of 22 Jump Street (2014) by Michael F — 10 Mar 2016
22 Jump Street makes a pretty good 21 Jump Street look excellent. It falls into the ever-growing category of failed comedy sequels with only a few memorable laughs and little to no surprises. It doesn't even remotely try to disguise the fact that it's an utter rehash of the original. School drug case - check. Accidental ingestion of drugs and subsequent tripping scene - check. Jonah Hill falling in love with girl caught in the middle - check. Cheesy bromance - check.
By the time this movie reached its climax I was genuinely wishing it had actually been a sports flick about Jenko and Zook being the next all-time great QB-WR duo. I'm serious.
It's lazy and devoid of anything original, other than maybe Jillian Bell as the dealer and that was just...awful. Her entire fight scene with Jonah Hill was one of the stupidest things I've seen on screen in a long time. When will movie-makers learn that "it's funny cause they're is fat," isn't actually funny anymore? When will movie-makers learn that comedy sequels rarely, if ever, work out? Unfortunately, nowhere in the near future by the looks of this. Don't waste your time.
