Review of 21 Grams (2003) by Jenny X — 18 Nov 2012
The flawless performance by del Toro and his wife, played by Melissa Leo, and capturing their family dynamic on film was the most real and provoking part of this film. Of course I walked into thinking it might be another "larger' than life" movie attached to the likes of Sean Penn.
But his influence in this movie is much more subtle than usual which made it tolerable. His acting was average, which what it might have needed to me for me to enjoy it. Watts acting was flat and devoid of depth.
This film could have been much better if her character went further into the depths of life and death, past what was written in the screen play. Good pace overall, slow at parts, but interesting. The overall motif of the heart weighting 21 grams was clever and gave the movie a foundation to build itself on.
Unfortunately, with the exception of the evolution of Del Toro's character, I didn't see much transportation in the other characters or the plot itself for this movie to ty to get into the depth of what 21 grams really means.
