Review of 21 & Over (2013) by Orlando O — 20 Jul 2013
21 and Over does feel like a mixed bag of previous movies we have seen before like The Hangover and Project X. But 21 and Over is at least better than the brainless Project X. It does have some stupid humor, raunchy jokes, and somewhat a likable cast.
A smart college Jeff (Justin Chon) gets a surprising visit from his friends Casey (Skylar Astin) and Miller (Miles Teller) for his 21st birthday. His friends want to take him out drinking that night except Jeff has a medical school interview the next morning. His strict father (Francois Chau) has did plenty of favors to make that interview possible and wants to be sure Jeff will be there. The three friends go out for a drink, and eventually everything gets out of hand.
The plot was not meant to be a surprise to anyone except its targeted audience who enjoys watching college students having a blast one night while every thing turns for the worst. Then, there are some moments when the story does try to get a little carried away. But it was at least funny when it does go in a far-fetched area. 21 and Over does also contain a little character development with Casey and Miller as they break away from the parties or crazy situations were they discuss about how their friendship was affected as life is moving on or not being there for one or another. Then, the movie cuts back to them going into the wrong frat house while looking for somebody, and the vulgar humor does kick back into gear. The story does have a little sub plot of a love story between Casey and Nicole (Sarah Wright). It does stick out and feel oddly placed but it does feel needed.
Justin Chon was somewhat likable as Jeff Chang who is trying so hard to impress his father, and he does bring in a lot of laughs after his character gets a bit wasted. Yes, some scenes may be a bit vulgar but it works. Skylar Astin who is known from his latest other comedy movie Pitch Perfect, he plays a likable character who is suppose to counteract Miles Teller actions throughout that night.
If you care about watching a vulgar comedy about college students going through a wild night, than sure it may be worth your while. Overall, 21 and Over is an okay comedy film that is funny, has some decent acting, and is entertaining.
