Review of 21 (2008) by Jiana W — 22 May 2010
I gave it 3 full stars because the thought of beating casinoes out of thousands of dollars makes me feel warm and chocolately inside. That aside, the characters are kind of bland and/or annoying in this movie. Ben's friends are annoying. Speaking of Ben, I don't like Jim Sturgess. There. I said it. When I first saw his baby face in "Across The Universe", I thought this was just a bad role to go with a bad movie. I see him in this and this just confirms to me that he has no star quality or screen presence whatsoever. At least dudes like Tom Cruise or Billy Bob Thornton can make an otherwise crappy movie awesome just by being in it. Sturgess can take an "OK" movie and almost drag it down completely. Since I like Kate Bosworth and Aaron Yoo I'll let it go. By the way, more Aaron Yoo would have been great. I think he's adorable.
Other than that, very interesting concept, supposed to be based on real events though I am sure there are a lot of embellishments. Made me wanna learn how to card count, especially since I like blackjack. The DVD extra goes in-depth how to do it and I kind of get it, but I'm more of a hands-on person. One day.
