Review of 21 (2008) by Harry W — 23 Nov 2012
21 suffers from a script that's too mundane to comprehend as it is either too stupid, too cliche, too overused or too nerdy and features repeated use of the pointless line "Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!". It never settles on being especially bad in one section. It's also boring for the first hour and features no drama surrounding counting cards or characters good enough to care about. It never even attempts to dramatize any of the events, except the fact that counting cards turns you into the target for casino assassins which is ridiculous. I squandered a night sitting through this nonsensica.
LThe main sides of the positive light would be that the cinematography is done very well and as always, Kevin Spacey is flawless. Also, the other actors are fairly good as well despite being supported by a poor script.Jim Sturgess manages to confidently deliver his lines and gives a decent mood to the story. And along with his good voice, Laurence Fishburne delivers the goods again. Still, all of that isn't even enough to save this waste of two hours.
