Review of 20th Century Women (2016) by Brandon O — 06 May 2017
20th Century Women is a quaint, unidealized look at 70s society through the eyes of a single mother who was born during The Great Depression. There's a tension there that is showcased with subdued brilliance in Annette Bening's performance, who is also raising a teenage boy and housing an eclectic few in her large colonial home.
The interwoven stories and themes here (feminism, motherhood, evolving society, etc.) are compelling but the characters themselves are the standouts. Through phenomenal writing and direction, we get to swim in the chaos of these concretely-constructed, idiosyncratic characters who really carry the film (and all its about) along.
