Mills is a superb craftsman, a purveyor of all things small and significant and that truly make a difference. That's what 20th Century Women is, a film that makes a difference, that understands the nuances of life and what they mean (or don't).
Scene after scene, the pieces emerge but never complete the puzzle. There isn't, after all, a puzzle to complete. To call Mills's film a "slice of life" is to do a disservice to life itself, for this elegant portrayal of people trying to make sense of an ever changing reality speaks to more than just the 'slice'.
20th Century Women is a film about faith: the faith in people, in what they do, how they do it. It's a film about the simplicity of the mundane, the quest for enlightenment, the humility in the pursuit of understanding.
And it's a beautiful film, a film on the longing for meaning.
