Review of 20th Century Women (2016) by Tim M — 15 Jan 2017
There is a fine line between character development and a slow pace that brings a movie down. I loved the second half of this but the first half of this is slow and drags an otherwise fun experience lower than it needed to be.
That being said, the ending kind of sneaks up on you and grabs you by tightening up the loose ends. Mike Mills writes and directs a movie that again uses a unique way of telling a story. It's not as good as Mills' 'Beginners', but it's a nice edition to his resume.
While the story wanders it does make you think about your mother and relationships which is a Mills speciality. Annette Bening is as good as you'd expect her to be. The supporting cast is really good also.
Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Billy Crudup put together performances which make it hard to imagine anyone else in their respective rolls. However the real star to me was young Lucas Jade Zumann who portrays Bening's son.
He's fantastic. It's authentic and overall a good experience, but you have to stay with it for the first 50 or so minutes. If you hang in you get rewarded with a bunch of characters that you'll admire in so many ways.
