Review of 20th Century Women (2016) by John K — 15 Jan 2017
A perfect film about mothers and sons, this film felt so true to life it hurt. While Mills has noted that elements of the plot are auto-biographical to him, they felt auto-biographical to a lot of men and their mothers, as the relateability was high.
I saw many moments from my own childhood reflected on-screen, but from my mother's POV. Moreover, the characterization was done so beautifully, with all of the characters unique and painted in fascinating shades of gray.
While the entire cast is excellent, Bening, Gerwig, and Fanning are especially powerful here, as women from different generations with different views of how the world works. The best film of 2017.
