Review of 20th Century Women (2016) by Felipe F — 08 Feb 2017
In 1979, a 15 year old boy being raised by a single mom in Santa Barbara CA, is the setting for this coming of age film. His mom is concerned she can't teach him to be a man by herself, but the film is also about her friends coming of age as adults/teen as well.
Annette Bening is terrific in this detail packed story that is sometimes humorous sometimes dramatic, and often unsettling. I liked it but recommend it with the qualification that you need to be in a contemplative frame of mind and ready to digest a lot of story and characters without a huge payout at the end.
It's just a real life story.
