Review of 20th Century Women (2016) by Anthony K — 19 Feb 2017
Slow moving, though thoughtful and completely engaging, 20th Century Women is that kind of movie I almost feel is my guilty pleasure genre. Introspective indie dramas starring a bunch of white people whiting about, it's easy to criticize on that level.
But the stories it tells, the characters it builds, feel legitimately real, thanks in large part to an interesting expositional style (THIS is how you introduce an ensemble cast of characters via flashback montage, Suicide Squad).
It's the type of film that feels like reading a good novel, suitably taking advantage of the cinematic form with period music and photography. I really liked this movie.
