Review of 2046 (2004) by Samantha H — 28 Feb 2008
This is a really good film and a lot more complicated than its predecessor In The Mood For Love.
In Chungking Express Wong Kar Wai developed an incredible haziness, a blurry nature that conveyed a real sense of isolation in a community. In this film the cinematography is in such vivid clarity that every single thing is in focus and looks beautiful all the time. Christopher Doyle once again working his cinematic magic with Wong Kar Wai, simply beautiful to look at.
Everything is very tightly framed in this one too, which is really nice.
The computer graphics used are really good and a first for Wong Kar Wai, as they are used very sparingly they really are excellent.
This is another film that has established Tony Leung in my mind as one of the best actors around at the moment, he is really exceptional in everything I've seen him in, and when paired with Wong Kar Wai only good things can happen.
The love stories that develop between Chow and the women are all touching in their own way, but it is the developing story that he writes that make the film even more beautiful. The references to his life are so sweet, the cold area on the train so you have to hug to keep warm, the heading back to 2046 in the first place, the leaving again, it is all cinematic gold.
Faye Wong is also really good in this film and I need to see more of her, as I've only seen really good things from her.
This is a truely exceptional film and shows off one of the best directors in cinema ever. I just can't wait until My Blueberry Nights.
