Review of 2046 (2004) by Michael M — 19 Mar 2008
First of all, I'm a fan of Wong Kar Wai, but I can't give a high grade to 2046. It is the so-called final episode of the 60's series (DAYS OF BEING WILD and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE). Actually, if you have not watched these two pieces yet, you would be confused probably.
I would say it is a summary of films of wong kar wai up to 2004, you can easily find a lot of symbols and themes that have been shown in Wong's previous works, such as the theme of "Reject, and being rejected", "Memory", and, of course, "Time".
Also, you will be familiar with the quotes from DAYS OF BEING WILD and even CHUNGKING EXPRESS. The mysterious "hole" like stuff obviously indicates the tree hole that Tony Leung once told secret into it.
It seems that Mr. Wong wanted to express a lot of messages, while turn out that it gave me a feeling of confusion. All in all, it successfully summarized the 60s series, you will be enjoyed if you are knowlegeable about his works, but the style seems too complex for me.
Wong Kar Wai said it was the most satisfying film for him, but I comparatively miss the simple one Wong Kar Wai who once made CHUNGKING EXPRESS and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.
