Review of 2046 (2004) by Amanda K — 10 Jun 2008
Mr. Chow was irrevocably changed by his STRICTLY PLATONIC FRIENDSHIP with Su Li-zhen, no other woman can compare or even compete with her, this movie is basically Mr. Chow's life in the wake of Su Li-zhen.
As the trilogy progressed the cinematography has become increasingly lush and this visually is Wong Kar-wai at his best. I loved the strange fictional futuristic world in contrast with 1960's Singapore.
This is probably Ziyi Zhang's strongest performance to date and Tony Leung's Mr. Chow in 2046 is very different from the Mr. Chow back from in the Mood for Love, but they are unquestionably the same man only now he's older, slightly jaded, and left forever trying to get back to 2046.
