Review of 2046 (2004) by Victoria R — 01 Oct 2008
This movie is sort of like an appendix or slight addition to all of his previous work (especially "In the Mood For Love,") contrary to popular belief, I think it does stand on its own very well.
I just saw it the other night without having seen any of his work in a very long time, but still enjoyed it as a whole. Yes, I had a working knowledge of his previous work, but didn't really need to reference it.
If nothing else, the images and excellently consctructed shots ("the main subject of most of the shots is the composition"- Roger Ebert), the movie is perhaps merely a summary of the experiences we go through with love, romance and daily life.
Themes and elements are constantly repeated only with slight variations and different contexts. Even myself had always looked at this movie as merely a companion piece to his other work (i think this might just be an illusion created by the fact that it refers so constantly to "In The Mood For Love" and contains the same character, but Wai never explicitly even implies that this is a sequel or admendment to his previous work), but after watching it again, I enjoyed it solely on its own merits.
