Not at all as "weird" as I expected. If I'd have to define the overall it'd be "slice of life".
The 2046 story is not central, it rather accompanies the main plot which is centered around the love life of Chow Mo-Wan throughout the years. Somehow, I expected just a tad more depth but it was still a very good watch.
