Review of 2016: Obama's America (2012) by Nathan C — 05 Nov 2012
An unsettling movie that really made me think. I'm unabashedly Republican, but this movie reaffirmed my political beliefs, just in time for Election Day.
The documentary offers up an intriguing life story of Barack Obama -- a story that none of us really knew --, traces it to his actions as President, and speculates upon a possible scenario if Obama wins the 2012 election. And this scenario will not pose well for America...
I praise Dinesh D'Souza for his incredible efforts, for actually doing his research instead of making up crazy doomsday theories. Through analysis and lots of citations, he delivers a history lesson that strikes with an impact. The movie is entertaining at times, as we get to see the complex mess that is Obama's life unfold before our eyes. It gets scary around the last half, especially when it ponders on how Americans voted for an 'invisible' candidate who played the race card and used the words 'hope' and 'change'. And the future that is predicted is not only chilling, but also actually plausible.
This movie does get dull and rather long-winded at times. It seems off-putting initially that Souza presents his life story first, but this is to provide some comparisons -- and a stark contrast -- to Obama's story. Also, it's not likely to change any Obama supporter's mind, but it's most effective on the undecided voter. It tends to wave off some propaganda as well, which is unlike the style of a documentary.
Overall, it's one of the better and more interesting political documentaries I've seen in a while.
