Severely lacking in the script department, the film feels like it has one too many lucky escapes (everyone is falling to their deaths as earthquakes literally collapse Los Angeles but John Cusack, his children with his ex-wife and her boyfriend manage to escape) and coincidental happenings (the boyfriend just so happens to be crushed to death in one of the Arks' machinery, and suddenly the ex-wife is back on with John) to justify being a film with depth to go along with its powerful natural disaster imagery.
