Review of 2012 (2009) by Renzo V — 15 Jul 2014

"IS THIS THE END OF HUMANITY?".

- '2012' is a disaster movie directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, White House Down) and based upon the Mayan predictions. The film tells the story of a several people trying to outrun a global cataclysm. The effects are truly amazing as is the cast, but I do have to confess the events that are following are a bit messy and very predictable (You know who will survive). I mostly loved the scène where helicopters are taking animals towards the Arks. On its cast-list we see John Cusack (Identity, Con Air), Amanda Peet (Identity, The Whole Nine Yards), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Amistad,Children of Men) Danny Glover (Saw, The Color Purple), Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games saga, Natural Born Killers), Thandie Newton (Crash, Mission: Impossible 2), Oliver Platt (Flatliners, The Three Musketeers). How would you survive?

In 2009 Adrian Helmsley (Ejiofor) notices during a scientific visit to India that the core of the Earth is rising in temperature. After extended research, he meets up with the President of the US Thomas Wilson (Glover) and his Chief of Staff Carl Anheiser (Platt) to inform them that a global cataclysm is about to happen. To ensure humanity's survival, Arks are secretly build in the Himalayas, but only 400.000 people will be able to get on board.

In the meantime, Jackson Curtis (Cusack) who has recently divorced his wife Kate (Peet) takes his two children for a camping trip in Yellowstone National Park. When they arrive there, they are surprised to see that the site has turned into a military zone. When they trespass the three are taken to Helmsley, who recognizes Jackson from the novel he has written. Shortly after that they are released and meet the eccentric Charlie Frost (Harrelson), who is a radio host who is convinced that the government is keeping the end of the world a secret. They all are about the find out that Charlie could be right...
