Review of 2010 (1984) by Amanda M — 21 Feb 2008
I will always rank this film higher than 2001. For all of its plodding explanations, one should realize how NECESSARY they were after:
1) Kubrick BUTCHERED - yes, BUTCHERED, the narrative of 2001, and,.
2) then SLIGHTED Arthur C. Clarke by releasing the film before the book (which yes, the film was in fact based on, not the other way around) could be completed.
2010 did a much better job of framing Clarke's narrative and preserving the message of the story. It's a better adaptation than 2001 not because it's more faithful, but simply because it's more coherent in its message, and doesn't make you feel like you've been taking hallucinogens.
