Review of 2010 (1984) by Aaron R — 13 Feb 2009
"2010" is a much more exciting film than its predecessor, "2001". That said, "2010" doesn't have that film's distinct style and grandness. It's more like a regular movie, and it is so different from the original that they really don't even go together, although credit should go to Peter Hyams for even attempting to direct a sequel to a Kubrick film that really isn't all that bad.
It's just different from the original. Arthur C. Clarke's writing, though, leaves much to be desired. As his 2001 novels were written over many decades, he freely altered details to reflect changes in current events, and didn't do a very deliberate job of reconciling the conflicting details.
He also doesn't give us a sense of closure regarding the meaning of the alien life forms and the fate of Bowman. Overall, "2010" is a pretty good movie on its own. Just don't expect it to be like "2001" in tone, style, or plot.
