Review of 2001 Maniacs (2005) by Matt N — 14 Dec 2009
I had no idea that 2001 Maniacs was a remake until after I saw it back in 2005. I'll have to check out the original if it's anything like this one because I had a blast! Now, 2001 Maniacs isn't rocket science.
If you're going to watch this movie, don't expect any originality, a solid storyline or hefty characterizations. This flick is pure trash and definitely doesn't shy away from that. This movie is all about gore, tits and sick humor.
Some days, I have to shut the world off and enjoy movies like this. Today must have been one of those days. I laughed out loud at the out-of-line humor, drooled over the female flesh and cheered at the graphic violence.
Every off-colour and stereotypical joke was in the house so if you're easily offended, avoid this one. The abundance of graphic violence was so outrageous I couldn't help but smile every time somebody was offed (I'm going to hell).
The nudity was avast here. Almost every girl ripped her top off at least once, were giving eachother baths and even a pair of kissing cousins pop up. The women get their fair share of male nuidty so female horror lovers won't be turned off.
The actors pretty much all played their parts well and it helped that a couple of them are horror veterans, thus upping my liking. Robert Englund chews the scenery up big time but never to the point of being cheesy.
He's awesome. Lin Shaye is very convincing as Granny Boone. She's a riot. Giuseppe Andrews plays another quirky but interesting character and excells. Jay Gillespie and Marla Malcolm both pulled off their roles well and somewhat had me on their side.
Tim Sullivan has a wicked handle on his comedy and pulled off enough stylish shots to serve the story, but never went over-the top. Good show. On the downside, the lack or originality did get to me at times as there were no surprises for me here.
It wasn't to the point of annyoance, but stood out regardless. The last third of the movie did suffer from some downtime as we watched the characters wander around too much. You can tell it was there to fill the time up.
Lastly, the 'twist' at the end was really lame and made the whole movie seem a little trivial. It just didn't make sense to me in the long run, especially taking into account what I watched before it.
But those are minor qualms for a horror fan's wet dream. Yes, it's cheap. Yes, it has no taste. Yes, it's predictable. But this filled everything I craved for a fun time with a movie. Violence, nudity, many funny moments and a all-around "let's have fun with this" vibe.
An easy and nasty fix? This is the one. All others will want to look elsewhere.
