Review of 2001 Maniacs (2005) by Ralph R — 10 Sep 2008
Like too many horror movies these days, "2001 Maniacs" is a remake or reimagination of the HG Lewis gorefest "2000 Maniacs". As much as I generally don't care for remakes, the idea of remaking an HG Lewis film arouses curiosity in me.
Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger, assumes a new lead antagonist moniker here as the Mayor of Pleasant Valley, a backwoods historic pre-Civil War town filled with redneck cannibals. Everything is done here tongue-in-cheek style, steering much of this movie from it's horror roots into more of a gore-comedy, satirizing racial and geographical stereotypes along the way.
In the end, you'll get a few laughs and a nice amount of blood and guts for your 90 minutes.
