Review of 2001 Maniacs (2005) by Chris W — 16 Oct 2008
Proof that if a movie is on the Free Movies section of On Demand, there's probably a reason they're not charging you. Listen, I love old-school goofy post-80s slasher movies as much as anyone. But this is sub-"Friday the 13th".
THAT'S bad. No atmosphere, no really terror...just bloody, gruesome deaths played for laughs. Problem is, the laughs are all corny and I don't really care to get a chuckle out of death. Robert Englund seems to be trying to create another classic movie monster, ala Freddy, but here he's not so much chewing the scenery as much as he is cannibalising the sets.
Englund must have forgotten that by the time Freddy devolved into a stand-up comic instead of horror icon, he was no longer scary. Skip this movie unless you're a frat boy hoping for some cheap laughs.
