Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Humble P — 08 Sep 2013
As a young boy, I loved astronomy and read science-fiction. I took myself to see 2001 A Space Odyssey as a teenager. It was visually stunning, breath taking and connected with something deep inside me (though I knew not what) but left me confused.
It would only be years later, as a man that I would look back and see this epic masterpice again and realise just how far ahead of its time it was. Later still, I then learned how Kubrick always builds a plethora of hidden codes, symbols and hooks into his films and so had to watch it again.
LIke Ridley Scott's timeless masterpiece, BladeRunner, one has to re-visit this film in the light of the knowledge that there is much hidden in plain sight. (YouTube documentaries will help explain).
Kubrick was like a time traveller going back to the 60s to forewarn us of things to come, many of which have now happened. There is unlikely ever to be another Sci-Fi movie with such visual impact, deeper meaning and hidden depth.
