Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Critic M — 05 Nov 2013
The word iconic is overused, but in the case of "2001 A Space Odyssey" the use of the word is appropriate. This film left an undeniable mark on popular culture and the theme can be heard in countless parodies.
What strikes me most about this film is the cinematography. It is absolutely beautiful and enthralling. The special effects for the time were tremendous and set a new standard that was near impossible to surpass.
Admittedly the story is boring for the first half of the film and doesn't really do anything more than look pretty until after the first hour. The cinematic eye candy never stops, but fortunately for the audience there is also a fascinating story that kicks in at this halfway point.
The story of two astronauts and a rogue malfunctioning computer named HAL 9000 is the centerpiece of this legendary film. From this point in the story onward, things only get more strange and abstract.
The last act of the film is very open to interpretation. "2001" went beyond the boundaries and encouraged audiences to use their minds to come to their own conclusions about it's meaning.
Whether there is a deep philosophical meaning to the ending of the film or not, it is hard to deny that this film makes you think.
