Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Zachary S — 16 Jan 2014
What is 2001? What is it exactly about? Stanley Kubrick always refused to give meaning to his films, so we can never truly know. But what I do know is that this is a monumental masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time.
It is complex, challenging, ambiguous and mysterious - in other words a film that will always stand the test of time and lasts even a million viewings. Its questions about God, human's need for knowledge, the human evolution and dangers of technology are always topical and relevant.
The film looks as stupendous as it did in 1968, and is simultaneously an exciting, baffling, thought-provoking and sometimes frightening and oppressive (I'm mainly referring to the stargate sequence) experience.
Kubrick directed many masterpieces in his career, but this will always remain his best, and along with Blade Runner is the crowning achievement of sci-fi film.
