Review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) by Joseph D — 15 Feb 2007
An American Cinema classic and one of the greatest Scii-Fi action films ever made.
The Disney version of Verne's Nautilus is the ICONIC version of that boat, and when one thinks of Verne's underwater divers, the Disney diving gear is what one reflexively sees in one's mind. Kirk Douglas as Ned Land is definitive. Ditto for James Mason as Nemo and Paul Lukas as Prof. Arronax. Peter Lorre's Conseil is over-the-top, but, as he's there for comic relief and no more , it really matters little.
The music, effects, and photography are superb, the song "Whale of a Tale" rollicking and infectuous, and Richard Fleischer's direction dead-on. A truly great piece of filmmaking. No to be missed.
