Review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) by Rachel S — 21 Jan 2008
A stunning live-action feature, masterfully done by Walt Disney.
James Mason makes the perfect tormented Captain Nemo, Kirk Douglas pec-flexes and sings "Whale of a Tale" while razzing an amazingly cute Peter Lorre; the squid fight is breath-taking; and the climax is both wrenching and inevitable. Plus, you'll never forget The Nautilus (I own two!). Gorgeously filmed in Technicolor and Cinemascope.
PS - get the Disney Ultimate Edition dvd: it boasts one of the best "Making Of..." documentaries I've ever seen,.
Lotsa missing footage (the aborted "Sunset Squid" sequence), and the Sunday newspaper comic adaptation by Jesse Marsh.
