Review of 200 Cigarettes (1999) by Rachel M — 15 Feb 2004
200 Cigarettes - what a great movie!.
I saw this movie listed at 3am the other night and since I HAD to see it again the ol' tape went in.... I ain't no young chickie that can stay up in the middle of the night no more. Need me beauty sleep! .
This movie made me laugh my ass off! AGAIN! I just love it and every single character in it... but for me, Martha Plimpton, stole the show. She is a freakin' riot! The story is set on New Years eve, 1981. It follows a bunch of people and their agendas for the night and finally they all end up at the same party. The one link between them all is a cabdriver, played by David Chappelle, who at one time or another throughout the night picks up each of the characters. He is one funny man!.
I think this is Kate Hudson's first big movie and the similarity to Mom in looks and laugh is striking. It was nice to see Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffman in their first almost-adult roles. Courtney Love made a huge impression on me (I just love her in every way!) and was a perfect match with Paul Rudd. Janeane Garafalo's part was way too small - boo hoo and Elvis Costello made several cameos. Like I said tho, Martha made this whole movie for me. She was the woman giving the party who kept freakin' at every tick of the clock that no one would show up and it would be the worst night of her life! What happens to her is priceless and I won't give it away. Ben Affleck makes a decent attempt at the bartender role and little brother Casey pretty much makes his debut. Notice I ain't screamin' about it too much. There are also lots of supporting cast that I know you'll recognize and they all do a fine job that makes the movie better in every way. All the scenario's bring back alot of memories as well as the EXCELLENT soundtrack - must add this to my collection since I forgot how good it was!!! I highly recommend this movie for a bunch of very funny laughs and guffaws especially at the end. Don't miss the last twenty minutes. :D .

Martha Plimpton is quite the comedian and if you get a chance to see some more of her movies (which in my opinion are too few) don't miss the opportunity. You won't be disappointed..
