Review of 20 Feet from Stardom (2013) by Nick D — 30 Jan 2014
Forgotten and overlooked, a generation of extraordinarily talented singers whose backup vocals formed much of the soundtrack of our lives finally get their due. Sprinkled among the contemporary interviews and some killer performances, we go back in time when the tight, gospel-tinged harmonies and soaring, if uncredited hooklines of the backup row dominated the emergence of pop and then rock and roll.
We meet some awesome performers, sometimes triumphantly in the case of Darlene Love, but more often than not, with wistful nostalgia. Amazing these folks aren't fueled by hatred and resentment.
