Review of 2 Days in Paris (2007) by James K — 31 Jul 2011
This film illustrates a juxtaposition known as intimate relationship: its difficulty and its simplicity, its understanding and the lack thereof, its clarity and its confusion. It tells of a story in which at the end it is as if nothing has happened, one which daily occurance is magnified to be significant when it is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, one that is almost disjoint but has to be 48 hours in the making (well, the title suggested "2 days").
To assist sitting through the first half or second third of this film, some interesting things and dialogues did happen. The climax is when he meets the fairy and realises that he does not know who she is. It was such a honest confession, enlightening and sad, yet so necessary. In a city that they call to be of love, a couple struggles to see the existence/importance of love yet what made they come to this city is not the decision to know each other better, it is as of they are forced into this situation where they need to make decisions. What's worse is the situatioon at the end induces a realisation that they potentially barely know each other.
What holds a disjoint storyline and the couple together is beyond the scope of this film. I commend the film for presenting it as it is. If people found it boring (or even unbearable), I completely understand. It is indeed boring (or even unbearable), but then that's perhaps what your understanding or inclination to belive what an intimate relationship may be. What you need is to forge on, on to the second day in which it perhaps gets worse, ie more boring (or even more unbearable). And then to think back how you struggled through all this, and then that's perhaps what your understanding or inclination to believe what an intimate relationship may be...or simply that an intimate relationship you have not been in.
