Review of 2 Days in Paris (2007) by Carla P — 08 Jul 2008
Delpy was, for me, the star of the Before Sunrise/Sunset films which explored ideal romance. Here, in her debut as director, the tables are turned as Marion and Jack are a well-worn couple rooted in neuroticism, which is strung out to breaking point on a stopover in Paris with Marion's parents and friends.
At first it's Goldberg's Jack who seems like the cliched neurotic semi-Jewish American, but by the end his whinging about allergies is no match for Marion's emotional and sexual skeletons in the closet.
There's some smart comic moments, but the film, like the characters falls apart into more and more high strung dialogue, which becomes overbearing. Delpy attempts a simple reconciliation for the last shots, but I didn't really care too much about the characters by that point.
