Review of 2 Days in Paris (2007) by Will S — 29 Aug 2008
Unexpectedly hilarious and self-deprecating romantic comedy by Delpy, who takes the scalpel to all that is allegedly romantic and fine about her home town, even casting her own parents as her character's parents.
We know it'll be nuts as soon as mum is seen reading the house magazine of the National Front and dad is portrayed as a sex-obsessed gallery owner. But what does this say about Delpy's Marion.
..? At first seemingly the less neurotic partner in her pairing with Goldberg's Jack, suddenly her own behaviour is up for scrutiny, and it isn't pretty. It's over the top yet honest and personal, and a clever use of handheld camera (not in the service of inducing nausea here) gives it an intimate and personal feel that overcomes any distance that may be created by the uproarious situations and character flaws that are hung out all over.
