Review of 2 Days in New York (2012) by Gary N — 17 Jun 2013
Delpy & Rock play Mr & Mrs with kids from their previous relationships. All seems well until her rustic French family turn up to throw a few domestic grenades into the couples sedately settled lives. Seeing a meagre 44% viewer rating, I wondered how begrudging the audience was being. I guess seeing Chris Rock's name led to his usual followers of one-note, loud mouth "hysterical" characters to turn up-and then turn off-this rather intelligent light comedy. This makes for something resembling a Judd Apatow comedy but its less crass & a little more real. Delpy-who directs and stars-has made a very worthy & smart movie here, which only derails a little towards the final third, when it falls into the conventions of Rom-Com territory. Chris Rock is much more likeable playing low key-and still having his most decent comedy role in a film outside of one of his gigs.
This proved a pleasant surprise.
