Review of 1941 (1979) by Brian M — 07 Sep 2007
Part comedy, part farce, part musical, part action flick, part subversive social commentary and completely unrestrained 1941 isn't like anything else anywhere else. In an interview in the DVD set Spielberg admits he had no vision for this film.
But that may have been what freed him and his writer/producer buddies to simply take every scene that they could to the limit and then beyond. This crazy mix then becomes social commentary as the ridiculous becomes the norm, the norm the ridiculous and the extreme the only logical response to the illogical.
Throw in superb cameos by a half dozen great characters, get everybody to scream and blow up almost everything in sight and you have a movie that fully deserves Slappy Squirrel's catch phrase, "Now THAT's entertainment!".
