Review of 1941 (1941) by Gordon T — 07 Feb 2010
Steve Spielberg fell in with the wrong crowd and made this MONSTROUSLY bad comedy. AS can be gleaned from JIM MCBRIDE'S UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF STEVEN SPIELBERG, Mr. Spielberg saw and became a HUGE FAN of JOHN LANDIS' ANIMAL HOUSE.
LANDIS and SPIELBERG became fast friends and LANDIS brought BELUSHI and ACKEROYD into the friendship.
As a result (of the "unholy alliance" [between SPIELBERG, LANDIS, BELUSHI, and ACKEROYD) we have before us 1941: a product of STEVE SPIELBERG directing in the style of JOHN LANDIS--an irresponsible, GIGANTICALLY-UNFUNNY FARCE of a movie.
Just as JOHN LANDIS crashed 250 police cars in THE BLUES BROTHERS and literally "killed" three actors on-set in THE TWILIGHT ZONE'S HELICOPTER INCIDENT, SPIELBERG in 1941 tries to do the same: wreaking-havoc in a scene culminating with a full-sized ferris wheel rolling uncontrollably through Los Angeles.
1941 gets a 60% instead of something like a 20% because its a STEVEN SPIELBERG movie and STEVEN SPIELBERG dosen't make bad movies.
I remember a story of "STEVEN SPIELBERG'S PRODUCTION OF POLTERGEIST A TOBE HOPPER FILM" where the MPAA gave POLTERGEIST an R-rating and SPIELBERG got the MPAA to give POLTERGEIST a PG-rating by simply saying, "I don't make R-rated movies.".
STEVE SPIELBERG is sooo charming to the point where even he can say to the MPAA: "change the rating" and the MPAA actually changes the rating with very few, if any, questions asked.
Somebody should make a movie about STEVEN SPIELBERG; Mr. SPIELBERG is a supernaturally charming filmmaker.
