Review of 1941 (1941) by Tony S — 21 Oct 2010
I'm the only person on Earth that would call this movie one of their ''favourites" (I hate calling films favourites, makes me seem like a typical ignorant fuck with a top 5 list for everything).
Spielberg in the 70s was at his directorial peak with a string of successful movies, offers to be a director for hire coming from all directions, everyone wanting to work with him and a key figure in the post-classical Hollywood era of American mainstream cinema.
This film was his first "bomb". Critics hated it, movie audiences didn't know what to make of it, and it didn't make a lot of money at the box office, despite it's large cast of comedians and veteran actors. If it wasn't for Austar/Foxtel airing it, I doubt many people in my generation would have bothered to watch it.
It's funny, well acted, well lensed and the story is great. If only comedies these days were ACTUALLY funny, instead we have to put up with Seth Rogan and crap like The Hangover.
I give this film 4 stars.
