Review of 1941 (1941) by Matthew O — 19 Jan 2014
1941 is the very definition of an okay movie that had all the material to be a masterpiece, great actors, funny jokes, excellent effects, it was all there, but it just wasn't used in the right way.
Nonetheless 1941, while being rather dull and weak in the beginning, somewhere along the line starts to get good, with some downright memorable scenes, from a conversation with a heights fearing man on a ferris wheel to a bizarre propaganda speech in the center of town.
Those are the moments that bump this up to a 3-star and save this movie from the fate it could have had. It's still a bit dreary in some parts, specifically a dance contest sub plot, and it doesn't have the wit and timing of it's inspirations It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Dr.
Strangelove, but it's worth a watch for the good stuff, and trust me, that stuff is worth it.
