Review of 1922 (2017) by Neil P — 10 Nov 2017
Like a farmer's American Gothic take on "a telltale heart" this is quite a slow film where the chills soak into the bone but leaves you feeling very unnerved at the end and afterwards. There is a sense of futility and dread permeating the film throughout.
Thomas Jane is excellent as the mumbling emotionally muted mumbler. The only problem is that all the characters are pretty unsympathetic which makes it feel like the film is keeping you at a distance throughout.
The scares are very understated and rather than using sound effects to scare it's more about things appearing. The make-up is very effective in this department resulting in some memorable shocks. It's just a shame it was hard to empathise with anyone.
