Review of 16 Blocks (2006) by Esteban G — 26 Dec 2011
"You're driving along in a hurricane. There's three people at the bus stop:
1) an old lady about to die.
2) your best friend.
3) the girl of your dreams.
You only have space, in the car, for one person. Who do you take?" - Eddie.
I like unlikely partnerships (Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, Martha Stewert and Method Man). Bruce Willis and Mos Def have that quality. When we meet "Jack" he's just a beaten guy who's not really liking life. Excellent choice because this gives his character some place to go. If you want to know what makes a thoroughbred so special watch him when he's behind in the race. At his core "Jack" is a good cop...more than that...he's a good person. It took a chance encounter, with someone from the outside, to bring it out of him. No superpowers. No CGI. Just a guy "trying to do a good thing.".
"You give the car keys to your best friend. You let him take the old lady to the hospital. You stay at the busstop with the girl because she's the girl of your dreams, right?" - Jack.
* Accentuate the Positive - Aretha Franklin.
