Review of 16 Blocks (2006) by Emil H — 17 Feb 2010
A slightly better than average thriller about corrupt cops and the one tired, pot-bellied cop who tries to do "the right thing." The story is cliched and the action pedestrian (literally, as the characters spend a lot of time walking and stumbling through Manhattan).
The only thing that pulls this just above mediocre are the performances from the leads. Willis, Def, and Morse are all decent. It's too bad the script has them reading each other's minds so they can continually surprise each other in stairwells, basements, and garages.
It's hard to believe it's that easy to spot someone on a crowded New York sidewalk and just as easy to lose them in the maze of buildings that line the sidewalks. And how does Willis's pasty-faced, overweight character go from being a flight of stairs away from a major coronary to lightly trotting up and down innumerable staircases?
