Review of 15 Minutes (2001) by Grant S — 18 Oct 2009
The basic theme of the movie was a good one: the news media are not mere observers or reporters of the news but determinants and creators of news and human behaviour, and are evil. Sentiments with which I agree entirely.
However, this attempt at exploring that theme was pretty lame and unsubtle. The plot was pretty conventional and heavy handed. Given such a good subject to tackle, it cast no new light on the matter, nor made a very good point.
Robert de Niro goes through the motions, though he hardly had anything to work with. Edward Burns was OK. Kelsey Grammer tries to shed his Frasier Crane pretentious nerd image by being the evil media bastard, and ends up being very unconvincing.
Not entirely bad, but could have been a whole lot better given the subject matter.
