Review of 1408 (2007) by Richard C — 05 Oct 2012
Anyone familiar with this Stephen King short story (from the fine Everything's Eventual collection) will be aware of the protagonist's crucial importance. When you read you take liberties but when you watch you are exposed to someone else's version. John Cusack's performance was well received and I wholeheartedly disagree. To me he seems always in a rush, over-eager and plain annoying...but not 'Mike Enslin' annoying. Maybe it shouldn't matter much but in this movie it does.
Elsewhere, the flashy direction cannot hide this by-the-numbers adaptation that offers little scares and less mystery.
